The MTV Movie Awards went ahead as scheduled tonight, fire or not. Although Universal Studios Theme Park was closed, as well as City Walk, the star-studded movie awards at the Universal Studios did not skip a beat.
Mike Myers and
Dana Carvey, the hosts for the night, resurrected their "Saturday Night Live" characters Wayne Campbell and Garth Algar, the cable access hosts of "Wayne's World." The MTV Movie Awards has it's winners chosen by viewers who cast votes online. And the winning stars get to know beforehand that they have won.
So who did viewers like this year?
For one,
Johnny Depp. He won Best Comedic Performance award for his turn as pirate Jack Sparrow in "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End." Depp won again tonight for Best villain Award, for playing the titular killer in "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street."
Best Female Peformance went to Ellen Page of "Juno". In the category of "Best Summer Movie So Far", "Iron Man" crushed the competition, which included some heavies, like the back-to-back blockbusters "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" and "Sex and the City."
Will Smith took Best Male Performance for his work in "I Am Legend." Smith shared a memory with the audience, saying "I was sitting there with my little man [son Jaden, who accompanied him onstage] and I remembered that I was on this stage in 1988. And to be here today in 2008, I just really want to say thank you, guys," Smith said. "I haven't always made great movies, but I've been trying real hard."
The 2008 MTV Generation Award went to
Adam Sandler, who was introduced with much praise by Tom Cruise. Sandler paid himself tribute as well, by singing Carly Simon's "James Bond" anthem "Nobody Does It Better" while a montage of his movie clips scrolled on the big screen.
And Best Film Of The Year was won by robots...well Transformers, to be exact. The blockbuster about robots in disguise took home the golden popcorn trophy.
Accepting the best film award with director Michael Bay, "Transformers" co-star Megan Fox trotted out some R-rated language to describe how good the film's sequel is going to be. Bay said the film would begin shooting the following day and take place two years after the first film.
And if they handed out an award for the strangest moment of the MTV Movie Awards Show, it would have to go to Presenters
Seth Rogen and
James Franco, stars of the upcoming stoner comedy "Pineapple Express," for pretending to smoke marijuana before handing out the popcorn trophy for the new category of best summer movie so far.
"Kids, don't really smoke fake weed like this," Rogen sarcastically told the crowd at the Gibson Amphitheatre.
As they pulled out the "contraband," the cameras pulled away to a wide angle, staying that way until Rogen and Franco left the stage. The awkward moment made some in the audience laugh, but left
Robert Downey Jr. who accepted the award on behalf of "Iron Man" with a puzzled look.
"Thanks fellas," he said, "for that intoxicating introduction."
